a father’s love

17 Jun

A Father’s love

does not depend on

the times he looks at you from above

and says the words, I love you.

It has more to do with

how much he persists

in calming you when little bits

of water and salt rain down your face.

It has so much to do with how many times

he’ll dumpster dive

amidst the filth and grime

in a White Castle or in an airplane above the Atlantic

or in a mall

to find your retainers

which you got in the Fall.

A Father’s love

has everything to do with

the little blessings He bestows

from the time that you’re little

to the time that you’re grown,

and raising a little Father

of your own.
